Put simply, a bunded oil tank is two tanks – an inner one and an outer one. This inner tank is where the fuel will be stored, whereas the outer tank is essentially a safety precaution to collect and prevent spills from occurring. Generally speaking, having these bunds within the oil tank is a requirement for commercial, industrial and institutional premises.
The answer to this question will typically depend on where you are looking to install your oil tank. If you are wanting to have one fitted in a commercial, industrial or institutional-based premises, such as an office, workplace or school, then you will need to have a bunded oil tank fitted as a legal requirement.
In order to stay safely protected from fire, bunded oil tanks need to be fitted a minimum of 1.8 metres away from any part of a building that isn’t fire resistant. This includes building features like doors, windows, eves and cladding, as well as garden-based structures like sheds, awnings and pergolas.
Generally speaking, installing your oil tank indoors isn’t recommended. However, it can be done – but only if specific indoor requirements are met. These requirements include enclosing the chamber within a chamber and ensuring the oil supply doesn’t pose an environmental threat in the event of a leak.
Bunded oil tanks are built to last and will typically come with a 10-year manufacturers’ warranty. This is a lot longer than the guarantees that many other types of oil tanks – such as single-skinned tanks – often come available with.
